About ASLOT
A 501C3 Organization registered in the state of Texas

The Association of Sierra Leoneans in Texas (ASLOT) is a conglomeration of Sierra Leonean immigrants and families of immigrants residing in Texas. In 2010, a group of visionaries within the Sierra Leonean community in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex (DFW) assembled to commemorate Sierra Leone’s 50 years of independence. As part of this celebration, a series of annual events were organized, including Independence Picnics and Soccer Tournament March.

Out of that successful celebration and series of pursuant meetings primarily focused on creating a unified community to celebrate Sierra Leone in Texas, as well as, to create a rapid response force in addressing national concerns of our people in Sierra Leone, ASLOT was formalized on November 23, 2014. The organization’s mission, therefore, became, to organize Sierra Leonean organizations within the state of Texas to come together as one, while engaging in mutuality with non-Sierra Leonean friends to celebrate, help support our community, address national concerns, and support projects for sustainable growth in needed areas such as healthcare, education, social empowerment, and the like, to benefit the people of Sierra Leone.
1. Creating a sense of cohesion amongst Sierra Leoneans living in Texas.
2. Leveraging the individual resources of the various organizations in order to support projects for the development of Sierra Leone.
3. Informing, educating, and creating awareness among Sierra Leoneans and non-Sierra Leoneans regarding the people and their:
3.1 Ways of life and civilization
3.2 Values and philosophy
3.3 Language and literature
3.4 Culture and music
3.5 History and heritage
3.6 Arts and architecture
3.7 Rights and interests
and working to preserve and promote a constructive evolution of the same.
4. Working and cooperating with other individuals and organizations with regard to issues that concern Sierra Leoneans including:
4.1 Human rights
4.2 Social justice
4.3 Peace
4.4 Cultural tolerance
4.5 International brotherhood
4.6 The eradication of hunger, poverty, and disease
4.7 The conservation of ecology
5. Examining the role of the Sierra Leonean community in Texas and promoting the quality of life for Sierra Leoneans in the U.S. and abroad.
6. As part of its mission, ASLOT continues to organize Sierra Leoneans in addressing issues of national concern to Sierra Leone as well as coordinating community activities and events, including, but not limited to:
6.1 2014–2015 SL-DFW Ebola pandemic crisis effort that benefited thousands of Sierra Leoneans suffering from that deadly virus
6.2 2017 SL-DFW Mudslide Relief effort, assisting victims and their families with food, shelter, medical supplies, and finances
6.3 2020 COVID-19 DFW Task Force effort through medical supplies
6.4 Tanker Fire Disaster effort in December 2021
6.5 August 2022 Western Area Flash Flood disaster effort
6.6 Coordination of the community calendar of events
6.7 Organization of annual community independence picnics, interfaith events, and graduations
Our Mission
The mission of the Association of Sierra Leonean Organizations in Texas (ASLOT) is to build a culture so strong in which Sierra Leoneans feel part of one cohesive unit working together to foster community engagement, cultural pride, and mutual love and respect, as well as to seek opportunities to benefit our community, our children, and our people.
Vision
The visions of ASLOT is collectively contributing and sharing our resources in a unified effort to take ownership in building strong, mutually connected loving, caring, and thriving Sierra Leonean communities in Texas, and overall, to celebrate our heritage and sustainable prosperity to benefit our people, country, and society in general.
